Methoxyflurane Mechanism of action
Inhaled analgesic
Methoxyflurane indications
Moderate to severe pain
Methoxyflurane Contraindications (5)
Known to severe allergy
Personal or family history of malignant hyperthermia
Unable to obey commands
Known renal impairment
Received methoxyflurane within the last week
Methoxyflurane Cautions (3)
Aged 75 years or more particularly if Ill
Pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure, swelling oh hands and feet)
Giving in confined space
Methoxyflurane pregnancy and Brest feeding
May be administered during pregnancy
May cause temporary drowsiness in the baby and should be discussed with maternity cater if there are known signs of foetal distress
May be administered during breastfeeding
Methoxyflurane Dosage
Max of 6ml (2 doses) for patients 12 years and older
Max of 3ml (1 dose) for child less than 12 years
Methoxyflurane Common adverse effects (4)
Sedation
Light headed ness
Nausea
Horrible smell or taste
Methoxyflurane Onset of effect
1 - 2 minutes
Methoxyflurane Duration of effect
2 - 5 minutes after stopping administration
