Prednisone Mechanism of action
Inhibits the production of inflammatory mediators
Prednisone Indicated for
Bronchospasm from CORD or asthma
Rash from anaphylaxis if all signs and symptoms have resolved
Minor allergy with rash
Prednisone Contraindications
Known severe allergy
Age less than 1 year
Prednisone Cautions
Age less than 5 years with asthma unless history of asthma and has previously received oral steroids
Prednisone pregnancy and breast feeding
Withhold if problem is rash or itch
May be given if breast feeding
Prednisone Dosage
40mg for adult - 2 tablets
Additional full dose if patient taking a dose lower than described in CPG’s.
Prednisone adverse effects
Bitter taste
Fatigue
Sodium and water retention
Reflux
Prednisone Onset of effect
30 - 60 minutes
Prednisone Duration of effect
24 hours
