Ondandetron Mechanism of action
Blocks serotonin receptors in the brain and peripherally in the gastrointestinal tract.
Reduces nausea and vomiting
Ondansetron Indicated for
Clinically significant nausea and vomiting
Ondansetron Contraindications
Known severe allergy
Aged less than 1 year
Ondansetron Cautions
Prolonged QT syndrome (fast chaotic heart beats)
Ondansetron pregnancy and breast feeding
May be administered if nausea or vomiting is severe
May be administered while breast feeding
Ondansetron Dosage
8mg oral for patient 12 years and over - 2 wafers
IM and IV 4mg for patients 12 years and over.
Ondansetron common adverse effects
Headache
Flushing
Metallic taste
Ondansetron Onset of effect
Oral 10 - 20 minutes
IV 2 - 5 minutes
IM 5 - 10 minutes
Ondansetron Duration of effect
4 - 8 hours
Ondansetron Usual preparation
4mg wafers
IM and IV not applicable to EMT
