TRAINING PROGRAMS - 2 Flashcards
principles of training tapering peaking
Define Tapering
Involves decreasing the volume of training whilst maintaining or increasing intensity an athlete does to allow the body time to recover from the stresses placed on them during training.
List the 2 types of tapering
- Physical
- Mentally
Define Physical Tapering
the taper period should be long enough to repair tissue damaged during training and the refuelling of energy stores.
Define Mentally Tapering
The aim of a taper is to help the athlete reach their Ideal Perforing State (IPS).
Tapers are usually how long
4-28 days
Endurance athletes require what type of taper
-Short Tamper
Strength and power athletes require what type of taper
- Longer taper periods are more important for sprint & strength
List 4 strats used to taper
- Reduce training volume and maintain or increase training intensity
- Increase the use of recovery techniques between sessions
- Monitoring diet to ensure athlete has adequate glycogen stores
- Individualise the program to ensure athletes’ needs are met
Define Peaking
The term used to describe a temporary training state which allows the athlete to perform at their optimal level
Physiological characteristics of a peaking athlete list at least 4
-Injury free
-Improved rate of recovery
-Optimal cardiovascular, muscular and energy systems
-Responds automatically to demands
Psychiological characteristics of a peaking athlete list all 3
-Increased self confidence
-Ignores irrelevant cues
-Mentally relaxed whilst still alert
TACTICAL & TECHNICAL of a peaking althete list all 2
-Ideal technical efficiency
-Tactically prepared
