ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS - COLD 3 Flashcards
strategies to manage performance in these environments
List all 4 ways to help cope with exercising in the cold
1.Experiment with the length of warm-up
2. Experiment with layered clothing
3 .Psychological acclimatisation
4 .Ensure adequate fluid replacement, as water loss will be increased via the need to humidify dry, cold air before it enters the lungs
To cope with the body’s extremities getting cold what should an athlete do
Wear suitable clothing, dress in layers and cover extremities e.g., gloves, beanies etc.
Athletes will use more glycogen and fats due to shivering using them as a fuel source. This will have a negative impact on performance as glycogen stores will deplete earlier in the event
What should they do
- increase the amount of CHO and fats in their diets
Cold environments can cause dehydration as the body moistens the air as we inhale, losing fluid from the body.
What should they do
- Maintain fluid intake
Cold weather increases the chances of injury, particularly early in the event, if not adequately warmed up.
What 3 methods should a athlete use
- Warm up in a sheltered area to avoid wind chill
- Do a longer warm-up than usual
- Have suitable warm clothing for players on the bench
