What is it?
A
Caused by toxins produced by bacteria staph aureus or strep pyogenes
Produce systemic inflammatory response leading to widespread tissue damage and organ dysfunction

What are clinical features?
A
Rapid onset
Fever
Hypotension
Sunburn like rash
Headache
Diarrhoea and Vomiting
Multi organ dysfunction e.g. hypoxia, AKI

What is found on investigation?
A
Diffuse erythroderma
Mucosal hyperemia
Signs of shock

How is it diagnosed?
A
Clinical presentation with supporting lab
- raised WCC and CRP
- positive blood cultures

What is the management?
A
Critical Care
IV fluids
IV abx
Vasopressor support
Manage complications
High morbidity and mortality if not recognised and treated promptly
