In 1600s England, young boys travelled Europe to see art/buildings. Banks would arrange letters of credit. Wars made it unsafe.
How did pilgrimages boost tourism?
Christianity, Bhuddism, Islam - became sightseeing and business opportunities for food/drink stops
What was Thomas Cook Travel?
Cook had temperance talks and bought railway tickets for his followers, conducting global tours.
How was Thomas Cook Travel overtaken? How did the company end (go bankrupt)?
1899: Inherited by grandson.
1928: Sold to Belgian Orient Express
WWII: Nationalized post war.
Privatized in 70s, bankrupt in 2019.
How did the travel industry change post WWII?
Jet travel made it easier to travel but it was still expensive- Only became cheaper in the 90s.
Cold War ending opened new destinations/travelers.
