Why did Canadian prohibitions against alcohol start?
1) Women’s suffrage from drunk men - Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Also Protestant church.
2) Dominan Alliance (1800) wanted Total Suppression of Liquor Traffic.
What obstacles did Canada/women face?
John A. Macdonald liked alcohol - uninterested in bans
What problems arose with Laurier? What did he do to fix it?
Was Liberal PM in 1898. English liked prohibition, French did not (80% of Quebec). He did nothing.
What happened in PEI in relation to alcohol prohibition?
Prohibited from 1901-48 - was seen as patriotic and food conserving
How was alcohol consumed in the trenches?
WWI soldiers loved it - boosted morale, “medicinal”
How was soldiers’ in WWI drinking perceived back home?
Canadians against drinking but soldiers loved rum. PM felt pressure but soldiers threatened mutiny if they removed rum
How was alcohol perceived in Canada after WWI?
Went back to selling. Also illegal transfer of alcohol started
How did America handle prohibitions?
Restricted in constitution from 1920-1933. Reversed by 21st amendment.
How did the ban on alcohol affect Canada? How did unbanning affect Canada?
Lost jobs and legacies and went to black market. Unban in 1927 made it tourist spot for Americans (and smuggling)
What did Premier Howard Ferguson say?
Liquour Control Act was to protect this “God-given freedom” and promote sobriety, liberty, and respect for the law
Why did the federal government stop the manufacture and importation of liquor in 1918?
March 11, 1918 - Passed War Measures Act as federal prohibition as temporary war measure.
