King William III put tariffs on French wine and tax breaks to British gin distillers (to domesticate)
What problem did the benefits given to English gin distillers cause?
Drunkenness - more people made gin to get benefits but didn’t know how to drink it
When was the problem with gin fixed in England?
Gin Act of 1751 - hard to get license and taxed gin
In what ways did gin help with taking medicine?
(1800s) People hated taste of quinine and mixed it with gin to make “gin and tonic”
How did the English/French get the sugar for rum?
Sugar plantations from colonies
What restriction did the UK put on the US? What did they drink instead?
US was prohibited from making rum by Britain (as a UK colony) - drank whiskey instead (part of Navigations Act 1651 that restricted colonies from trading)
How did Bacardi start? What was it famous for?
Served rum to Spanish royals in 1880. Created “rum and coke”
How did Fidel Castro affect the Bacardis?
Nationalized their distilleries - they had to flee to Puerto Rico (US).
What’s the current situation with rum, Cuba, and the US?
US put embargo against Cuba and are considering removing it. Bacardis want their property back.
What is gin?
Mixed alcohol + juniper berries in 16th-17th century.
