Topics 3,4,5 - Acids, Metals & Fuels: Properties Of Metals Flashcards
1
Q
What properties of aluminium make it useful for making aeroplanes?
A
It has a low density so it’s light, and it’s corrosion-resistant.
2
Q
What causes corrosion? How does a metal’s resistance to corrosion relate to its position in the reactivity series?
A
Corrosion is caused by metal being oxidised. Metals which are low in the reactivity series are more resistant to corrosion.
3
Q
Why is copper used a lot in plumbing?
A
Copper is hard but easily bent to make into pipes. Also, it won’t react with water.
4
Q
What makes copper good for electrical wiring?
A
Copper is a good conductor of electricity and is easily shaped so it’s a good metal for electrical wiring.
