Topics 3,4,5 - Acids, Metals & Fuels: Burning Fuels Flashcards
1
Q
Why can incomplete combustion be a problem?
A
Incomplete combustion produces carbon monoxide. The carbon makes messy sooty marks. The carbon monoxide is poisonous which can be dangerous.
2
Q
What do you need to consider when choosing which fuel to use?
A
E.g. How easily it ignites. How much energy it releases. How much ash or smoke it produces. How easy it is to store or transport.
3
Q
How would you test a gas to see if it’s carbon dioxide?
A
Bubble the gas through limewater. If it’s carbon dioxide, the limewater will turn milky.
4
Q
What happens during the complete combustion of a hydrocarbon?
A
The hydrogen and carbon in the hydrocarbon are oxidised to carbon dioxide and water and energy is given out.
