Topic 96 - Streptococcosis of swine (WHITE) Flashcards
What is streptococcosis in swine?
It is a worldwide occurring disease, mostly seen in weaned pigs causing septicaemia and sudden death, and is zoonotic
Causative agent of streptococcosis in swine
- streptococcus suis D
- streptococcosis porcinus
Virulence factors of streptococcosis in swine
Capsule
Haemolysin
Superficial proteins
streptococcosis porcinus - Causes abscesses in the lymph nodes of the head only detected at the slaughterhouse
Susceptible species for causative agent of streptococcosis in swine
Mostly swine
But also detected in: cattle, lamb, rabbit and dogs
Route of infection in case of streptococcosis in swine
Can be per os
and with contact: littermates, the sow transmits and it is found in the environment
Name the forms of streptococcosis in swine
Local form
Generalised form
Clinical signs in the local form of streptococcosis in swine
Swollen joints and lameness
Abscesses in the lymph nodes - seen in growers
Clinical signs in the generalised form of streptococcosis in swine
Causes septicaemia and sudden death !!
mostly seen in weaned piglets, 5-10 weeks of age
- Fluctuating fever
- Inappetence
- CNS signs: hypersensitivity, ataxia, convulsions
In adults, we rarely see disease
1. Pneumonia
2. Lameness
3. Endocarditis
4. Abortion
Post mortem lesions in case of streptococcosis in swine
- Anaemia
- Haemorrhages
- Spleen hyperplasia
- Liver abscesses
- Purulent meningitis
How to diagnose streptococcosis in swine
- Bacterial culture
- PCR
Not usefull to detect antibodies
Treatment of streptococcosis in swine
Can use penicillin, but important to know the animal remain carriers
Prevention of streptococcosis in swine
- Good hygiene
- Good feed quality
- Preventing predisposing factors
- Vaccine can be used, but this had had variable effect
(5. Vaccinate against the viral infections)
Predisposing factors for streptococcosis in swine
Overcrowding
Stress
Trauma
Vitamin and iron deficiency
