!!! General paramyxovirus Flashcards
Which type of virus is the paramyxovirus?
RNA, single stranded, negative
Is paramyxovirus segmented?
no
The orthomyxovirus is !!
Name the proteins involved in paramyxovirus:
Haemagglutinin
Neuraminidase
Fusion protein
What does the haemagglutinin and neuraminidase protein do, regarding paramyxovirus?
Help the attachements of the virus to the cells
What does the fusion protein do, regarding paramyxovirus?
Helps with the entry of the virus and also fusion of the cells when the virus replicates.
The fusion protein will be cleaved by the enzyme or protein of the host cell, and depending on the site of cleavage, it will be a protease
What is produced against the fusion protein, regarding paramyxovirus?
Neutralising antibodies.
Paramyxoviruses have good antigens and also a good immune response
Host range of paramyxovirus, wide or narrow?
Can be both, it depends on the fusion protein
How is the resistance of paramyxovirus?
Low.
How long can paramyxovirus sruvive in the environment?
few days only
How can we diagnose paramyxovirus?
By detection of antigen or antibodies, PCR or ELISA
Name diseases caused by paramyxovirus:
- Parainfluenza-3
- Newcastle disease !!
- Rinderpest
- PPR = Peste de pestitis ruminants
- Avian and human metapneumonvirus
- Canine distemper
- Hendra and nipah
Regarding parainfluenza, what is the host range?
Wide
Humans
Mice
Monkeys
Cattle
Sheep
Dog
They are not host specific !!
Other species can infect each other
Pathogenesis of the parainfluenza on general basis:
- Infection with aerosols
- There is a damage to the respiratory epithelium resulting in an inflammation of the respiratory tract
Clinical signs of parainfluenza on general basis:
Frequently asymptomatic
