Topic 9: Skeletal System - Bone Ossification Flashcards

1
Q

What is the function of the skeletal system? (5)

A
  • support
  • protection of vital organs
  • attaches muscles and allows movement

Q

What is the process of intramembranous ossification? (2)

A
  • osteoblasts produce spongy bone along CT fibres
  • periosteum forms and then osteoblasts under it lay down compact bone

Q

What occurs in endochondrial ossification? (3)

A
  • hyaline cartilage used as a model (similar shape) for bone construction
  • then ossifies to form spongy bone
  • periosteum forms and the osteoblasts beneath lay down compact bone
in lecture, its like a road map and you are adding minerals to make it stronger
