Topic 7: Endocrine System: Contraceptives Flashcards
1
Q
How do oral contraceptives work? (3)
A
- high estrogen and progesterone inhibits GnRH secretion
- therefore low FSH and LH
- basically it mimics lute phase so no follicle maturation and no ovulation occur
2
Q
How do implants work?
A
- example would be progestin, which is a similar mechanism to oral contraceptives
3
Q
How does the morning after pill work? (2)
A
- high estrogen and progestin, or progestin only
- prevents implantation, ovulation, or fertilization
4
Q
What is the placenta formed from?
A
- chorion (fetus) and endometrium (maternal)
5
Q
Do the blood of the mother and fetus mix in the placenta?
A
- blood vessels of mother and fetus are in close proximity. but DO NOT mix
6
Q
What are the 2 functions of the placenta?
A
- exchange site
- secretes hormones
7
Q
What is the placenta an exchange site for? (3)
A
- gases, nutrients/wastes, hormones, antibodies (passive immunity)
- drugs (alc, morphinem nic, etc.)
- viruses (measles, polio)
8
Q
What hormones does the placenta secrete?
A
- E and P
- hCG
9
Q
What is the function of hCG? (3)
A
- maintains corpus luteum for about 6 weeks post fertilization
- detected by pregnancy tests
- stimulates testosterone secretion by fetal testes
