Topic 6: Nervous System 6 - Motor Output - ANS Flashcards
What are the two divisions of the ANS?
- sympathetic
- Parasympathetic
What is the general pathway of the ANS? (2)
- CNS to smooth and cardiac muscle or glands
- 2 neurons to effector (pre and post ganglionic)
What are ANS neurons distinguished by?
type of neurtransmitter (nt) released
Which neurotransmitters for ANS neurons are cholinergic and adrenergic?
cholinergic = ACh
adrenergic - NE
What is the function of the sympathetic nervous system? (3)
- prepare body for activity
- fight or flight response
- activated during exercise
Sympathetic nervous system pathway
What is the nt for the preganglionic neuron in SNS?
- ACh
What is the nt for the postganglionic neuron in SNS?
NE EXCEPT for sweat glands, which is ACh
How do we stop chemical stimulations in the sympathetic nervous system? (2)
- need to remove nt
1. ACh broken down by acetylcholinesterase (AChE) on postsynaptic membrane (cell body/ dendrites of postsynatic neuron)
2. NE broken down by MAO (monoamine oxidase) in synaptic end bulb of the neuron that releasedit
What is the function of the parasympathetic nervous system?
- rest and digest
- “housekeeping”
PNS pathway diagram
What do most organs innervated by the autonomic nervous system have? (2)
- have both SNS and PSNS and usually have opposite actions
- ANS regulates internal processes continuously and automatically
ex. heart rate
How is heart rate an example of the ANS having both SNS and PSNS?
- SNS excites, PSNS inhibits
Effects of ANS table including SNS and PSNS
