Topic 8.3: Sustainable design Flashcards
Green design
focused on reducing or eliminating any negative environmental impacts the product may have
Approach of green design
Cradle to grave approach, the design when it reaches its life cycle it will be disposed in a way it will minimize environmental impact, there is no new life for its components
Focus of green design
Reducing packaging
Reducing energy consumption
Reducing materials, dematerialization
Switching to recycled material
Sustainable design
Focused on changing the whole system surrounding a product or service
Approach of sustainable design
Cradle to cradle approach to design, the manufacturers focus on the materials used to create the product, its distribution and the social and and not exclusively on the product
Focus of sustainable design
selecting materials that are sustainably and equitably harvested or extracted
Reduction of the environmental impact of manufacturing and distributing the product (e.g. locally manufactured, uses solar energy, etc)
Shifts from a typical business model prioritizing profits to a more triple bottom line
approach (profit, planet, people)
Dachinsky principles
Cyclic, solar, safe, efficient, social
Cyclic
creating no waste, products should be part of a recycling system
Solar
using clean energy, use or has renewable energy.
Safe
Harmless, products that are emitted into the environment (air, land and space) are non hazardous.
Efficient
using the least amount of energy and material as possible
