Topic 6 - Periodic table Flashcards
How were the elements of Mendeleev’s periodic table organised?
In order of increasing mass.
How are the elements on the periodic table organised today?
In order of increasing atomic number
What are horizontal rows on a periodic table called?
Periods
What are vertical rows on a periodic table called?
Group
Give 5 properties of group one elements as they increase down the periodic table?
become bigger atoms more dense even softer to cut lower melting/boiling points more reactive
Why do group one atoms get more reactive as they become bigger?
Because the single electron in their outer shell becomes farther away from the nucleus making it easier to lose.
What do all the group 1 atoms turn into when they react with water?
metal hydroxide and hydrogen
What happens when we put lithium, potassium and sodium into water ?
They all: float fizz release heat move about the surface crackle/explode
Group 2 show similar trends down the group to group one, but are much less…….. ?
reactive
What happens as the halogens go down the group ?
Bigger atoms
less soluble
increasing melting point
less reactive
Are all halogens diatomic molecules?
yes
What is the name given to group 8/0 on the periodic table ?
The noble gases
Give 4 differences between transition metals and group one metals
Transition metals: have higher melting points have higher densities much less reactive with water they form coloured compounds
