Q

Why does conduction occur in electrolytes ?

A

The conduction of electricity by an electrolyte occurs because the ions can move and carry charge.

Q

Describe what happens in the process of electrolysis of lead(ii) bromide

A
  • it splits up into lead ions and bromide ions
  • the lead ions move to the cathode and for lead atoms
  • the bromide ions move to the anode and form bromine ions

16
Q

What doe you get when bauxite is purified ?

A

Alumina

17
Q

Why is the alumina dissolved in molten cryolite ?

A
  • reduces the melting point of alumina to 900*C
18
Q

How is the aluminium extracted from the Alumina ?

A

The Al ions are attracted to the cathode and aluminium atoms form

19
Q

Why does the anode need to be replaced regularly ?

A

The oxygen reacts with the graphite anode and the anode burns to produce carbon dioxide. So they need to be replaced.

20
Q

Why is recycling aluminium beneficial ?

A
  • its much cheaper than producing it from bauxite
  • recycling saves waste
  • recycling saves the natural resources of bauxite
