topic 5 Flashcards
1
Q
define extinction
A
- if a behaviour that was previously reinforced stops being reinforces, the behaviour will weaken or decrease
- not the same as forgetting behaviour
2
Q
What are some side effects of extinction
extinction burst, extinction-induced agression,spontaneous recovery
A
- extinction burst: behaviour intensifies before decline
- extinction-induced agression: behaviour of aggressivenes not done before
- spontaneous recovery: after period of extinction, behaviour may reappear, despite lack of reinforcement
3
Q
How does continuous schedule effect extinciton? intermittent schedule?
A
- continuous schedule = faster decrease in behaviour (lower RTE)
- intermittent = slower decrease in behaviour(higher RTE)
4
Q
Factors influencing effectiveness of extinciton
how does magnitude of previous reinforcement affect extinction?
A
- larger reinforcer produces greater RTE
5
Q
factors influencing effectiveness of extinction
how does inadvertent reinforcement effect extinction? What should be combinded with extinction?
A
- inadvertent reinforcement occurs during the extinction phase = behaviour increase
- extinction of unwanted behaviour should be combined with reinforcement of a functionally equivalent alternative behaviour
