topic 4.0 substances undergo chemical change when iteracting Flashcards
Reactants
Materials that start a reaction
Ex. Wood and oxygen to start a fire
Chemical reactions
When two or more substance combine to form new substances
Ex. Launching a space shuttle
Products
New materials provided by the reaction of reactants
Ex. Carbon dioxide is given off a burning campfire also water and energy are released
Word equations
In a word equation the reactants always appear to the left of the arrow and the products to the right
Ex. Wood+oxygen -> carbon dioxide+water+energy released
Evidence of a chemical reaction
Colour change
Formation of a solid or has
Release or absorption of heat
Exothermic reactions
Chemical reaction that releases heat energy
Ex. When you burn an object it gives off heat
Endothermic reaction
Chemical reaction that absorbs heat energy
Ex. Chemical cold packs
Combustion
A chemical reaction that occurs when oxygen reacts with a substance to form a new substance and give off energy
Ex. Fire
Corrosion
A slow chemical change that occurs when oxygen in the air reacts with a metal
Ex. Rusting
Cellular respiration
A chemical reaction that takes place in the cells in your body
Ex. Food reacts with oxygen to produce energy and CO2
Writing chemical reactions into chemical equations
Use the chemicals and write their chemical name and ion charge
Use plus signs to show the adding of compounds and than wrote an arrow to show the product on the other end using its chemical name and ion charges as well
Law of conservation of mass
In a chemical reaction, products are formed when the reactant/reactants undergoes a change. These products usually look different from the reactants. The total mass of the products is always the same as the total mass of the reactants. Matter is not creates or destroyed in a chemical reaction
Ex. Combining different amounts of chemicals to proclaimed a new substance using both of their chemical names and ion charges
Closed system
Where no additional material is allowed to enter or leave
Ex. Hydraulics
Open system
Where additional material is allowed to enter or leave
Ex. Air breaks
Finding the amount real eased or the total added of chemicals
Add the amount of chemicals together and than subtract it from the final mass to find out how much of a substance was released
To find the product just simply add the amount of both chemicals together
