Metaphor
Comparison of 2 things
Saying that one thing “is” the other
Ex. My love IS a red rose
Alliteration
Repetition of sounds either at the beginning or inside of words
Ex. Peter piper picked a peck of pickled peppers
Hyperbole
Exaggeration usually for dramatic effect
Ex. This is taking forever!
Symbol
Visual object that suggests further meaning
Nike “swoosh” (logo)
Onomatopoeia
Attempt to represent a thing or action with a word that represents a sound associated with it
Ex. Pop, bang, pow
Understatement
Implying more than is said
Ex. Einstein was OK at math
Pun
Play on words which remindes us of another word or similar sound, but with different meaning
Ex. To say I’m not good at making puns would be a punder-statement
Personification
Giving a non-living object or thing, human like actions or attributes
Ex. The moon danced
Idiom
Sayings that are understood but do not mean what they say
Ex. Chase your tail
Get your ducks in a row
Literal language
Say exactly what you mean
Ex. The flowers smell sweet
Figurative language
Describes something through comparison
Say one thing but mean another and it is not always understood
Ex. The flower had the sweetest smelling petals in the word (hyperbole)
Couplet
2 line poem with the same Rhythmic pattern in each line
Haiku
Japanese poem that creates a picture
3 lines: syllables 5-7-5
Focus on nature
Emotion through the descriptions in writing
