Toothbrushing demonstration + advice Flashcards
What is it?
removes bacterial plaque from flat surfaces of teeth (labial, buccal, lingual, palatal + occlusal). the demo should be carried out on large model initially, to see action + talk through techniques. they can then perform on theirselves with own toothbrush so suitability can be assessed + advice given on better product
1.
toothbrushes with small head + multi-tufted medium nylon bristles are probs most effective for vast majority
good-quality, rechargeable electric avoid need for consistently good manual techniques + more likely to achieve prolonged high standard of OH (good for carers also)
2.
the brush is rinsed to wet bristles + portion of recommend toothpaste is added.
each arch is divided into three sections: left, right + front. whilst side sections are divided into buccal, lingual, occlusal
front - labial + lingual
3.
pts should be instructed by (cheek side, tongue side, lip side) which amounts to 8 groups at least 5 secs spent on each
use of egg timers to obtain idea of how long recommended 2 mins is - some electric toothbrushes have this incorporated
4.
pts should be encouraged to develop their own start + end point within oral cavity + followed systematically so methodical routine is developed.
for gingival crevice plaque, should have brush head angled towards gum as they brush side to side
5.
discourage a forceful sawing action because of abrasion, each surface is cleaned and the toothpaste is spit out
no mouth rinsing as this removes residual toothpaste + prevent chemical components from continuing to act in the mouth (particularly important for fluoridated tooth paste to protect enamel)
6.
parents will need to perform toothbrushing on child up to 8 years to ensure all plaque is removed + teach how to brush correctly
7.
brushes should be rinsed afterwards + allowed to dry - they only have a limited life + need to be replaced every few months as the bristles curl down + render the brush ineffective
