Communication Flashcards
Good communication
between dental team + patients is crucial if they are to take an active role in managing their own oral health
Why is it important
necessity for consent given for trt, but also leads to an understanding between all parties, especially if pt is unsure about trt options or even refuses
Dependent on
the dental team showing good communication skills + is important for dental nurses as pts often prefer to discuss matters with them rather than the dentist
Communication means:
to give or exchange info - this means verbally + non verbal
Patients whose first language is not English:
could present challenges - family member or friend should be encouraged to attend + act as an interpreter. If valid consent cannot be given for trt + pt doesn’t understand the language being spoken
Cultural differences
dental staff should be aware of these between ethnic groups + accept + deal in an appropriate manner
Questions to ask:
do they need direct advice with one to one?, are there factors involved that prevent them from achieving good OH? (disability, or habits)
is the cause of their poor OH a dietary issue? such as high sugars or acid intake
Questions to ask:
are the simply disinterested in their OH or are they unaware they have a problem?
are general health factors involved that either exacerbate or cause OH problems? or do they override their OH problems?
Are there barriers to good communication?
