a huge variety available from shops own brand to specialist from OH product suppliers, with ingredients to fight against all aspects of common oral disease. examples of all likely to be recommended should be available in session so that it is referred specifically. many workplaces may also stock + sell various types to ensure pts are using those that have been recommended
General use mouthwashes
containing various ingredients to promote good oral hygiene such as sodium fluoride + triclosan
Desensitising mouthwashes
for use with generalised tooth sensitivity
Hydrogen peroxide mouthwashes
presence of oral soft tissue inflammation as a first aid measure or after oral surgery
Chlorhexidene mouthwashes
pts suffering from both acute + chronic periodontal infections and is also an antiseptic plaque suppressant
High-concentration fluoride mouthwashes
for individuals at high risk of caries + orthodontic patients
The dental nurse
will advise the pt to use recommended mouthwash in addition to good tooth brushing regime + not instead of it. are best used before bed time so that their formulation is not washed off the teeth by food or drink. some mouthwashes may be used several times a day + for young orthodontic pts may take small bottle to school for use after lunch
