Fixed appliances Flashcards
Fixed appliances
every tooth is incorporated so a lot of stagnation areas + potential for oral damage. Routine twice daily brushing alone is insufficient to maintain adequate standards + special instructions + techniques are recommended
The nurse should
give following advice to pt + parent or guardian as they will be responsible for supervising oral hygiene techniques + necessary diet control between appts.
can demo on model with fixed appliance + allow pts to follow actions in their mouth
1.
careful manual toothbrushing should be carried out after each meal - should not be vigorous scrubbing as likely to dislodge parts of the appliance
good quality electric toothbrushes such as sonicare + oral B may be safely used instead
2.
Fluoridated toothpaste must always be used
as well as fluoride mouth wash daily, to minimise risk of decalcification
3.
daily use of interdental brushes to clean around each bracket individually
avoidance of cariogenic + acidic foods + drinks for the full period of trt
avoidance of sticky foods
4.
Regular use of disclosing tablets, to highlight problematic areas where plaque is being retained + thus minimise risk of decalcification
