Hyoid bone within the root of the tongue
Superior Longitudinal Insertion
Front edges of the tongue and the upper surface of the tongue tip

Shorten the tongue, pull the tip upward, and pull the lateral margins upward
Inferior Longitudinal Origin
Hyoid bone at the root of the tongue
Inferior Longitudinal Insertion
Lower surface of the tongue tip
Inferior Longitudinal Use
Shortens the tongue and pulls the tip downward
Vertical Origin
Just beneath the dorsum of the tongue
Vertical Insertion
Near the sides of the lower surface of the tongue
Vertical Use
Flattens the tongue
Transverse Origin
Median fibrous skeleton of the tongue
Transverse Insertion
Fibrous tissue along the side of the tongue
Transverse Use
Narrows and elongates the tongue
Styloglossus Origin
Side of the styloid process of the temporal bone and the stylomandibular ligament
Styloglossus Insertion
Sides and root of the tongue and from there fibers run in various directions
Styloglossus Use
-Draw the tongue body upward and backward
-Pull the side of the tongue upward
-Shorten the tongue
-Pull the tongue tip toward the side
