Tongue Muscles Flashcards
Superior Longitudinal Origin
Hyoid bone within the root of the tongue
Superior Longitudinal Insertion
Front edges of the tongue and the upper surface of the tongue tip
Superior Longitudinal Use
Shorten the tongue, pull the tip upward, and pull the lateral margins upward
Inferior Longitudinal Origin
Hyoid bone at the root of the tongue
Inferior Longitudinal Insertion
Lower surface of the tongue tip
Inferior Longitudinal Use
Shortens the tongue and pulls the tip downward
Vertical Origin
Just beneath the dorsum of the tongue
Vertical Insertion
Near the sides of the lower surface of the tongue
Vertical Use
Flattens the tongue
Transverse Origin
Median fibrous skeleton of the tongue
Transverse Insertion
Fibrous tissue along the side of the tongue
Transverse Use
Narrows and elongates the tongue
Styloglossus Origin
Side of the styloid process of the temporal bone and the stylomandibular ligament
Styloglossus Insertion
Sides and root of the tongue and from there fibers run in various directions
Styloglossus Use
-Draw the tongue body upward and backward
-Pull the side of the tongue upward
-Shorten the tongue
-Pull the tongue tip toward the side
Palatoglossus Origin
Lower surface of the palatal aponeurosis
Palatoglossus Insertion
Side of the root of the tongue
Palatoglossus Use
Pulls upward, backward, and inward on the root of the tongue
Hyoglossus Origin
Upper border of the body of the body and greater cornua of the hyoid bone
Hyoglossus Insertion
Side of the tongue near the back
Hyoglossus Use
Lowers the tongue body and draws it backward
Genioglossus Origin
Inner surface of the body of the mandible near the midline
Genioglossus Insertion
-Lower fibers: Into root of the tongue
-Middle Fibers: Into tongue near the junction of the dorsum and blade
-Upper fibers: Into the tip of the tongue
Genioglossus Use
-Move the tongue root forward and force the tongue tip forward
-Pull the front of the tongue backward
-Pull the center of the tongue downward to form a depression along its length
