Extrinsic Larygneal Muscles, Ligaments, and Membranes Flashcards
Cricotracheal Membrane
Connects cricoid cartilage to tracheal rings
Hyoepiglottic Ligament
Connects hyoid bone to epiglottis
Hyothryoid Membrane
Connects hyoid bone to thyroid cartilage and gives rise to the middle and lateral hyothyroid ligaments
Sternothyroid Origin
Back surface of the top of the sternum and the first costal cartilage
Sternothyroid Insertion
Outer surface of the thyroid cartilage
Sternothyroid Use
Contraction pulls the thyroid cartilage down
Thyrohyoid Origin
Outer surface of the thyroid cartilage
Thyrohyoid Insertion
Lower end of the greater cornu of the hyoid bone
Thyrohyoid Use
Contraction decreases the distance between the thyroid cartilage and the hyoid bone
Inferior Constrictor Origin
The median raphe (seam) at the back of the pharynx
Inferior Constrictor Insertion
On the sides of the cricoid and thyroid cartilages
Inferior Constrictor Use
Contraction moves the sidewall of the lower pharynx inward
Extrinsic Laryngeal Muscles general use
-Stabilize the larynx
-Change its position within the neck
