Oral Prepatory Main Points
-Begins when substance touches structures of anterior oral vestibule
-Velopharynx is open
-Breathing may continue or stop temporarily (apneic interval)
-Lasts up to 20 seconds
Oral Transport phase
-Tongue elevates to move bolus towards pharynx
-Lips may press together and cheeks move slightly inward
-Velum begins to elevate
-UES begins to relax
-1 second long
Pharyngeal Phase
-Under automatic control
-Velopharynx closes forcefully
-Hyolaryngeal complex moves upward and forward
-Larynx closes at three levels: vocal folds adduct, ventricular folds adduct, epiglottis folds down over the larynx.
-Tongue pushes bolus into pharynx, pharynx constricts to squeeze bolus towards esophagus
-Bolus divides to pass through left and right valleculae to left and right pyriform sinuses
-UES opens
-1 second or less
Esophageal phase
-Bolus enters UES
-Peristaltic actions propel bolus with pressure differentials
-Primary peristalsis may be followed by secondary peristalsis
-8 to 20 seconds
