Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES)
-Sphincter that stays closed actively, then opens to allow food into the stomach
-Also called “gastroesphageal sphincter”
Stomach
-Large, saclike structure on the left side of the abdominal cavity below the diaphragm
-Connects to the esophagus via the lower esophageal sphincter and to the small intestine via the pyloric sphincter
-Holds about 1 liter of substance after a meal
Saliva
-Water plus other elements
-Lubricates oral cavity, protect teeth and mucosa
-Helps form bolus; begin the digestive process
Salivary glands
~90% of saliva is produced by these three glands
