tongue Flashcards
tongue is mainly composed of?
visceral striated muscle
how are the muscles in the tongue arranged?
into three planes
- longitudinal muscles
- transverse muscles
- vertical muscles
the epith. lining the lingual mucosa is
non keratinized stratified squamous
what makes the dorsal surface rough?
epithelium and the papilla which are mucosal projections
what are the most numberous amount of papilla in the tongue?
filliform papilla, which are slightly keratinized and have no taste buds
what other papilla is scattered among the filliform papilla
fungiform papilla which can have taste buds present in the apical epithelium
the lamina propria
- underlying lamina is richly vascular
- deeper lamina propria is dense fibrous connective tissue making the (lingual aponueorisis)
what is located at the side of the tongue near the root
foliate papillae containing secondary papillae,
what is the lining of the foliate papilla?
non keratinized, or slightly keratinized stratified squamous epithelium, thick on the top and thinner on the sides
what is on the side of the epithelium of the foliate papilla
taste buds, lighter stained, barrel shaped which have openings called taste pores
what type of cells are the taste buds composed of?
gustatory cells, rod shaped cells and basal cells
what can be located on the base of the papilla in the lamina propria?
serous glands, which epmty their watery sectrtion into the interpapillary sulci over the taste buds
what are the excretory ducts lined with?
stratified cuboidal epithelium
what is infront of the V-shaped sulcus terminalis
circumvallate papillae, slightly progect out from the mucosal surface
what are the circumvallate encircled by?
deep celfts.
