prostate Flashcards
what constitues the main bulk of the prostate gland
fibroelastic stroma with abundant smooth muscle
what contains the rich prostatic venous plexus which surrounds the gland?
the dense prostatic fascia
what is the covering of the prostate and what does it do?
- fibroelastic capsule, containing smooth muscle fibers
- from the capsule septa penetrate the gland dividing it into lobes
how are the tubuloalvelor glands of the prostate arranged? and what does each arrangment contain?
arranged in two concentric zones around the urethra
- internal (mucosal and submucosal glands)
- peripheral (main glands)
what is the type of cells in the glandular epithelium, and main glands?
- glandular epithelium is simple coloumnar in the main glands
- pseudostratified in the mucosal and submucosal glands
where does the prostatic duct open into? and what is the opening lined with?
prostatic urethra, and is lined by stratified coloumnar epithelium
what fills the spaces of the between the glandular profiles?
fibromuscular stroma, dense connective tissue containing collagen and elastic fibers and abundant strands of smooth muscle fibers
what is the urethra lined by? and what maybe present below the opening of the ejaculatory duct
urothelium, but below the openings of the ejaculatory ducts patches of pseudostratified and stratified coloumnar epithelium maybe present
what happens to the prostate with advancing age?
- oval or colloid amyloid bodies called prostatic concentrations are often present in the alveolar lumina.
- they are concentric lamella of calcified glycoproteins stained eosinophilic
what are seminal vesicles, and what do they display?
coiled tubular glands, and display irregular diverticula (lateral outpocketings)
what is the wall of the simnal vesicles composed of?
- inner mucosal
- middle musclular
- outer connective tissue layer
epithelium of the seminal vesicle, and what is seen in the apical part?
- it is pseudostratified cuboidal in some places, simple columnar
- lipofuscin granules and secretory vacuoles are seen in the paical part
in the lumina of the apical part
-alkalin and proteins rich secretory product stains intensely eosinophilic to show wide range of secretory products like (fructose, prostaglandins, endorphin, transferin, lactoferrin, fibronectin)
what does the lamina propria of the seminal vesical consist of?
connective tissue containing scarttered smooth muscle cell,
thin long branching and interconnecting folds or ridges of the mucosa
what gives a labyringth- like appearance to the glandular lumen around the central cavity?
the irregular primary, secondary, and tertiary folds projecting into the lumen
features of the muscularis externa in the seminal vesicle?
smooth muscle fibers arranged in inner circular and outer longitudinal layers
the adventitia is?
a connective tissue rich in elastic fibers, which surround the gland that extends into the space between the coils connecting them?
what stain does the penis have?
verhoeffs elastic stain
what attaches loosely to the underlying connective tissue?
thin penile skin
what is slightly kratinized below the skin? and what is present?
- the epidermis
- loose superficial penile fascia which is devoid of adipocytes
what does the superficial fascia of the penis contain?
smooth muscle that are continours with dartos muscle of the scrotum
what runs upward in the subcutaneous tissue of the penis?
the single superficial dorsal vein
what surrounds the three cavernous bodies? and seperate the superficial dorsal vein from the deep dorsal vein
fascia penis
what is the main bulk of the penis composed of?
three cylinderical bodies of cavernous or erectile tiussue
what does the corpus spongiosum penis contain?
the urethra and at its end the corpus spongiosum expands forming a conical enlargement called GLAND PENIS
what does the tunica albuginea surround in the penis and what does it form?
surrounds the corpora cavernosa penis and between the two bodies it forms a median fibrous septum (septum penis)
** incomplete distally
what surrounds the cavernous spaces? and what are they lined with?
- elastic fibers and smooth muscle cells
- lined by endothelial cells
what are ebner cushions
semilunar protrusions of the cavernous wall, important mechanism of erection
what branches into the trabeculae? what is important about some of these branches?
deep arteries of the penis, a part of the banches directly ends in capillaries and supply the trabeculae
what do the other branches form
concoluted helicine arteries that open directly into the cavernour spaces
the thin wallaed veins draining the cavernous spaces are located?
undr the tunica albuginea, they leave corpoa cavernosa and run around them to join the deep dorsal vein located in the dorsal medican groove of corpora cavernosa penis
tunica albuginea of the corpus spongiosum
is much thinner and has more elastic fibers and smooth muscle cells are also present
what surrounds the mucosa of the urethra
circular fibrous layer surrounds the mucosa of the urethra
what is the penile urthra lined by?
stratified columnar epithelium which contains lightly stained mucus secreting endoepithelial cells.
what does the penile mucosa display?
numerous small recess, which some of them lead into branches tubular mucus secreting glands (littre glands or urethreal glands ) located in the submucosa
what are elastic fibers and collagen fibers stained in?
- elastic fibers in black colour
- collagen fibers in red
