Is a spit which joins an island to the mainland.
Can only occur if conditions for deposition are present.

A

Onshore migration of material from offshore as sea levels rose following last ice age

Can be partially submerged by incoming tides

A

Elongated bank of deposited sand/ shingle lying parallel to coastline.

Not submerged by incoming tides.

Sand dunes can develop.

Sheltered areas between barrier beach and land can be one marsh / lagoon
