Coastal Currents Flashcards
1
Q
Name the 3 currents.
A
Longshore currents.
Rip currents.
Upwelling.
2
Q
What are longshore currents?
A
They occur as most waves do not hit the coast ‘head on’ but at an angle.
They transport material along the coast.
3
Q
What are rip currents?
A
Strong currents moving away from the coast.
Can be hazardous to boats and people as fast flowing off-shore surge can drag people into deep water.
4
Q
What is upwelling?
A
The movement of cold water from deep ocean towards the surface.
More dense cold water replaces the warmer surface water creating nutrient rich cold ocean currents.
5
Q
What do upwelling currents form part of?
A
The pattern of the global ocean circulation currents.
