Coastal Problems Flashcards
Why do coastal problems happen?
Because of human intervention in the natural world.
and
Natural processes posing threats to humans.
Name the 2 coastal problems.
Coastal flooding.
Coastal erosion.
Name the processes involved in coastal retreat?
Marine erosion and sub-aerial processes which lead to mass movement.
What are the 2 forms of coastal erosion?
Slumping of cliffs.
Loss of land.
What material is easily eroded?
Unconsolidated material.
Found along Eastern England.
Where does slumping of a cliff occur?
Along a rotational slip plane, which is lubricated by rainwater.
2 forms of slump - rotational and a flow.
How is the coastline attractive for a wide range of reasons?
In England at least 1/4 of the coastline has been developed for housing, industry, agriculture and leisure activities.
Name the 4 natural causes of coastal flooding?
Global warming.
Storm surges caused by hurricanes/tropical cyclones.
Storm surges caused by low pressure, high tides.
Tsunamis.
Name the 2 human causes of coastal flooding?
Global warming.
Coastal management.
How is direct human action causing many problems along the coast?
Disruption to erosion by building groynes are disturbing sediment movement which has induced accelerated rates of erosion for natural cliffs elsewhere.
What do sand dunes rely on?
Supply of sediment for survival.
Disturbance of the sediment can cause blowouts and disintegration.
What is the response to manage the sand dunes?
Replanting vegetation.
Fencing areas off.
Selective grazing.
Why are coral reefs important?
Found in more than 100 countries in the tropics.
Contain some of the most biologically rich ecosystems in the world.
What is acting as a threat to the coral reefs?
Human activity.
Pollution.
Impact of tourists.
Sale of coral.
What has been a response to manage coral reefs?
Pollution controls and restrictions on tourists.
Controls on reef mining.
St Lucia.
