Tisues Flashcards

1
Q

Gap Junction

A
  • Cell junctions that allow the passage of ions and small molecules
  • Cells are connected through connexons
  • The passage of ions is to create a charge, so these junctions are usually found in the heart and nervous tissue which are powered by electrical impulses

Q

Tight Junction

A
  • Cell junctions that do not allow the passage of any substances
  • These cells are connected by junctional proteins
  • mostly found in the intestine and blood-brain barrier

Desmosomes

A
  • Structural junction that can withstand stress
  • Looks kind of like velcro
  • Found in the skin, uterus, and heart

Q

Epithelial Tissue

A
  • Lines the body, at least one side is always facing toward some kind of cavity/free space
  • Contains exocrine and endocrine glands
  • Functions: Protection, absorption/secretion, filtration, diffusion/ion transport
  • Simple, stratified, pseudostratified
  • Squamous, cuboidal, columnar

6
Q

Simple, Stratified, Pseudostratified

A
  • Simple - A single layer of cells, good for diffusion and filtration. Found in areas with little wear and tear.
  • Stratified - Many layers of cells on top of one another. Defends against microbes and protects areas that face wear and tear Usually only squamous cells
  • Pseudostratified - Columnar cells arranged so that the nuclei do not line up, creating a stratified appearance

Q

Types of Glands

A
  • Exocrine secretes substances into ducts
  • Endocrine secretes substances directly into the blood
  • Paracrine glands secrete over short distances, such as between cells

Q

Types of Cell Repair

A
  • Regeneration: Replacing damaged cells or cut sites with the same type of cell
  • Fibrosis: Proliferation of scar tissue
  • Organization: formation of granulation tissue (new connective tissue with microscopic blood vessels that forms during wound healing)
