Organelles Flashcards
1
Q
Nucleus
A
- Cell replication and repair
- Usually one per cell, except for red blood cells (none) and muscle cells (multinucleated)
2
Q
Ribosomes
A
- Make proteins
- Either free within the cytosol of the cell or attached to another organelle
- Free ribosomes make proteins for the cell
- Attached ribosomes make proteins for export
3
Q
Smoot Endoplasmic Reticulum
A
- Calcium storage
- Detoxification
- Steroid production in the ovaries and testes
4
Q
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
A
- Many ribosomes attached
- Makes new organelles
- Protein production for export
5
Q
Golgi Complex
A
Packages proteins for export into vesicles that can leave the cell
6
Q
Peroxisome
A
- Filled with enzymes that oxidize harmful peroxides
7
Q
Lysosomes
A
- Perform Digestion for the cell
8
Q
Proteosome
A
- Digests proteins
9
Q
Cytoskeleton
A
“Muscle and bone” of the cell
10
Q
Cilia and Flagella
A
- Cilia have directional movement that propels the cell or an object outside of it
- Flagella will propel the cell in a random direction using whip like movements
11
Q
Mitochondria
A
- Produce ATP for the cell during aerobic metabolism
- TCA cycle and ETC
12
Q
Cellular Diversity
A
Each cell will have a different number of each organelle based on its function
- Each cell type will look completely different
