Tissues In Vertebrae Flashcards
what are the four main tissues in vertebrae?
epithelial, connective, nervous, muscle
what is the purpose of epithelial tissue?
made up of tight cells, makes up outer layer of body and lines internal organs
simple epithelial tissue
single layered cells
striated epithelial tissue
multiple layered cells
squamous striated epithelial tissue
flat, multiple layered tissue, lines the esophagus
cuboidal simple epithelial tissue
cube/tube like structure, single layered tissue, forms tubes in the kidneys
columnar simple epithelial tissue
column like cells, single layered, lines the intestines
what is the purpose of connective tissue?
numerous body functions (transports, supports, defends, provides structure)
what are connective tissues made of?
consists of cell fibers including collagen and elastic and consists of extracellular matrix
name all 6 types of connective tissue
loose, fibrous, adipose, cartilage, bone, blood
what is the purpose of loose tissue?
found underneath the first layer of skin (epidermis), holds organs in place
what is the purpose of fibrous tissue
packed with collagen fibers, forms tendons and ligaments
what is the purpose of blood?
special connective tissue, transports substances throughout the body,
what is the purpose of bone tissue?
calcium and phosphate storage, contains living cells that allow bones to grow
what is the purpose of adipose tissue?
fat is stored within these cells, helps insulate body and store energy
what is the purpose of cartilage tissue?
forms strong skeletal material, makes up our ears and nose,
substances that make up blood
plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets
plasma is made of
water, salts. dissolved proteins, enzymes
what do red blood cells do?
contain oxygen + carry it throughout our body
what do white blood cells do?
defend the body against infection
what do platelets do?
sent to injured area and aid with blood clotting
ligaments are connective tissue that
connect bone to bone
tendons are connective tissue that
connect muscle to bone
