Organ Systems Flashcards
what is the hierarchy of biological organisms?
atoms, molecules, cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, organism
name systems in the body (11)
integumentary System, Skeletal System, Muscular System, Nervous System, Endocrine System, Cardiovascular System, Lymphatic System, Respiratory System, Digestive System, Urinary System, and Reproductive System
integumentary system
protects the body against bacteria, infection, physical harm, etc… includes the hair nails and skin
5 main functions of skeletal system
mobility, protection, support against gravity, calcium regulation, blood cell production
axial skeleton
skeleton that supports the axis of the body, (skull, vertebrae, ribcage, breastbone)
appedicular skeleton
components of a skeleton that support arms and legs (bones of hands, feet, arms, legs, shoulder girdle, pelvic girdle)
lymphatic system
AKA: immune system, drains extra cell fluid, helps us fight sickness and diseases. (spleen, lymph nodes)
excretory/urinary system
AKA: urinary system removes waste from blood in the form of urine (kidney and bladder)
reproductive system
external and internal organs that allow organism to reproduce,
digestive system
breaks down food into cells to allow the body to absorb the nutrients (stomach, anus, mouth, intestines)
endocrine system
releases hormones into the bloodstream and controls mood, growth, and development. this is long term (female ovaries and male testes)
nervous system
controls what decisions you make, the things you feel and the actions your body does (brain, spinal cord, nerves)
muscular system
keeps the body warm and helps with mobility along with the skeletal system
cardiovascular
delivers oxygen, hormones, and nutrients to organs and the around the body (heart, veins, arteries, capillaries)
respiratory
brings fresh air into the body and gets rid of toxic gases (lungs, nose, diaphgram)
