Tissues Flashcards
What are the 4 types of tissue?
Epithelial
Connective
Muscle
Nervous
How many cells thick is simple epithelial tissue?
One
What is the main function of simple epithelial tissue?
Absorbtion
How many cells thick is stratified epithelial tissue?
Several layers
What is the main function of stratified epithelial tissue?
Protection
What are the 3 forms of simple epithelial tissue?
Squamous, cuboidal, columnar
What are the properties of non keratinised stratified epithelial tissue?
Softer tissue, found on wet surfaces such as mouth
What are the properties of keratinised stratified epithelial tissue?
Hard tissue, found on dry surfaces like skin
What is the most abundant tissue in the body?
Connective tissue
What is the function of connective tissue?
Structural support, protection, insulation
What are the 5 types of connective tissues?
Loose connective tissues
Adipose tissue
Dense connective tissue
Reticular connective tissue
Specialised connective tissue
What are the 3 types of muscle tissue?
Smooth, skeletal, cardiac
What muscle tissue is under voluntary control?
Skeletal
Where is the cardiac muscle found?
Heart wall
What are the 2 types of nervous tissues found in the nervous system?
Excitable cells and non excitable cells
What do excitable cells do? Give an example?
Recieve signals and respond
E.g. Neurons
What do non excitable cells do? Give an example?
Support nerve cells
E.g. glial cells
