Musculoskeletal System Flashcards
What does long bone consist of?
2 shafts, many extremites
What does short bone consist of?
No shaft or extremites, diverse in shape and size
What is periosteum?
Vascular membrane that covers bone apart form joint cavities
What does the inner layer of periosteum contain?
Osteoblasts and osteoclasts
What are osteocytes?
Mature bone cells
What are osteoblasts?
Form new bone
What are chondroblasts?
Secrete cartilage matrix
What are osteoclasts?
Bone resorption
What are chondrocytes?
Mature cartilage cells
What is the epiphysis?
End of long bone
Give an example of a long bone
Femar
Where is cancellous bone found?
Epiphysis
What does cancellous bone look like and what are its characteristics?
Sponges, looks like honeycomb
What bone does canaliculi connect?
Cancellous
What are trabeculae?
Thin plates and columns of bone that creates sponges texture in cancellous bone
What is found between trabeculae in cancellous bone?
Red bone marrow
What % of compact bone makes up body bone mass?
80%
What is compact bone made of?
Parallel tubes called osteons
Hyversian systems are another name for what?
Osteons
How are osteons linked together in compact bone?
Lateral perforating canals
What is lamellae in compact bone?
Cylinder plates of bone around the canals
What are the spaces between lamellae called?
Lacunae
What are joints?
2 or more bones joined together
What are the three types of joints and what is there range of movement?
Fibrous- no movement
Cartilaginous- some movement
Synovial - free movement
What is the space between joints in synovial joints called?
Synovial cavity
How are the ends of bones held together in synovial joints?
Capsules
What is flexion?
Bending
What is extension?
Straightening
What is abduction?
Movement away from midline
What is addiction?
Movement towards midline
What is circumduction?
Extension, flexion, abduction, adduction
What are the 3 classifications of joints and what movements come under these?
Ball and socket- all movements
Hinge- flexing and extension
Gliding joints- very limited movement
