Lipids Flashcards
What is the structure of a triglyceride?
1x Glycerol back bone
3x fatty acids
What is the structure of a phospholipid?
1x glycerol backbone
1x phosphate
2x fatty acid tails
What are the properties of an unsaturated fat?
-liquid at room temp
- carbon-carbon bonding
-less packed together
-vegetable oils
What are the properties of saturated fats?
-carbon bonding to hydrogen, no carbon-carbon bonding
-solid at room temp
- meat and dairy
What is a phospholipid bi layer?
Hydrophilic head on the outside, and hydrophobic tails on the inside to provide water repellent barrier
What elements are lipids composed of?
Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in long hydrocarbon chains
What are essential fatty acids?
Cannot be made by the body; may have to be injested
Are lipids soluble or insoluble?
Insoluble
Are lipids polar or non polar?
Non polar
Where may fats be stored for energy?
Adipose tissue
What is the main function of fats?
Insulate and protect internal organs
What is the disease where plaque deposits form in arteries?
Atherosclerosis
Phospholipids can assemble into bubbles called?
Micelle
What are some of the functions of phospholipids?
Matrix of cell wall
Myelin sheath
