Tissues Flashcards
1.) Function of Epithelial Tissue?
Protects, Covers, and Lines
2.) Function of Epithelial Tissue?
Absorbs Nutrients
3.) Function of Epithelial Tissue?
Provides Sensory Input
4.) Function of Epithelial Tissue?
Manufactures Secretions
5.) Function of Epithelial Tissue?
Manufactures Excretions
1.) General Characteristics of Epithelial Tissue?
Cells are polar, has an apical surface, and a basal surface.
What Side Does the Apical Surface Face?
The Lumen, or Body Cavity
What Side Does the Basal Surface Face?
The Underlying Connective Tissue.
2.) General Characteristics of Epithelial Tissue?
Lateral Surfaces Connected to Neighboring Cells by Junctional Complexes.
3.) General Characteristics of Epithelial Tissue?
They Lack Blood Vessels or Capillaries. They are Avascular.
4.) General Characteristics of Epithelial Tissue?
Most Cells are Innervated and Provide Sensory Input.
What is a Desmosome?
A Strong, Welded Plaque Connects the Plasma Membranes of Adjacent Cells.
Formed by Filaments.
What is a Hemidesmosome?
A Half Desmosome, Links Epithelial Cells to the Basement Membrane.
What are Gap Junctions and Connexons?
Cells Connected by Gap Junctions are Linked by Tubular Channel Proteins Called Connexons.
What Is Microvilli?
Fingerlike Projections, or Thousands of Tiny Hairs, Called Cillia
Simple Epithelia?
Provides Little Protection to the Underlying Connective Tissues. Found in Protected Areas such as Internal Compartments, Ducts, Vessels, and Passageways.
Stratified Epithelia?
Thicker and Stronger, Subjected to Mechanical and Chemical Stress.
Stratified Squamous Epithelium?
Cuboidal Cells are visible near the Basement Membrane. Squamous Cells are Found Near the Luminal Surface. Altogether, Is call Stratified Squamous.
Simple Squamous Epithelia?
Delicate and Thin. Lining Passages Involving Gases or Liquids.
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium?
A Single Layer of Cubic Cells. Provides Little Protection from abrasion. Is Found in Areas of Secretion and Absorption.
Simple Columnar Epithelia?
Elongated and Closely Packed Together. Lines the Length of the Gastrointestinal Tract. Found in Many Excretory Ducts.
Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium?
Two Layers of Cuboidal Layers. Found in Large Excretory Ducts.
What is Connective Tissues Composed of?
Extracellular Fibers, Ground Substance, and Cells
What is Ground Substance?
Amorphous, Homogenous Material. Can be a Liquid, a Gel, or a Calcified Solid.
Composed of Unbranched Chains of Glycoproteins Called Glycosaminoglycans.
