Skeletal System Flashcards
What is Ossification?
The Osteoblasts Harden the Matrix, as It is Filled with Calcium and Phosphate in the Form of Hydroxyapatite Crystals.
What is Hematopoiesis?
Sites of Blood Cell Formation in Bones.
What is a Light, Spongy Bone?
A Cancellous Bone. (Also Called Spongy Bone)
What is a Heavy, Dense Bone?
A Compact Bone.
What is the Haversian System?
Tiny, Tightly Compacted Cylinders of Bones in Compact Bones.
What is the Haversian Canal?
Contains Blood Vessels, Lymph Vessels, and Nerves that Supply Osteocytes.
What is an Osteoblast?
They Form Bone.
What is an Osteocyte?
Osteoblasts that have been Ossified in the Matrix.
What is an Osteoclasts?
They Eat Away at Bone.
What is the Volkmann’s Canal?
Tiny Channels in the Bone Matrix that has Blood Vessels Pass Through?
What is the Nutrient Foramina?
Large Canals that Large Blood Vessels Pass Through.
What is the Endochondral Bone Formation?
Bones Develop by These Bones, Creates a Cartilage “Template,” then Replaced by Bone.
What is the Epiphyseal Plates or Growth Plates?
Sites of Creation Where the New Bones Allows Them to Lengthen.
What is Yellow Bone Marrow?
Consists Primarily of Adipose Connective Tissue (Fat).
What is an Articular Surface?
They are a Joint Surface, Where Bones Come in Contact with Each Other to Form Joints. They are Covered in a Hyaline Cartilage Called Articular Cartilage.
What is a Condyle?
A Large, Round Articular Surface. A Cylindrical Shape. Located on the Distal End of the Humerus and Femur on the Occipital Bone of the Skull.
What is a Facet?
A Flat, Articular Surface.
What is a Foramen?
A Hole in a Bone. Something Important (Nerve or Blood Vessel) Usually Passes Through the Foramen.
What is a Fossa?
A Depressed or Sunken Area on the Surface of a Bone. Usually Occupied by Muscles or Tendons.
What is the Axial Skeleton?
The Bones of the Head and Trunk are Located on the Central Axis of the Body.
What is the Appendicular Skeleton?
The Limbs are Appendages of the Trunk.
What is the Visceral Skeleton?
Bones Formed in the Viscera, or Soft Organs for Some Animals.
What is the Occipital Bone?
A Single Bone that Forms the Caudoventral Portion or the Base of the Skull.
What is the Foramen Magnum?
A Large Hole in the Center of the Occipital Bone. This is Where the Spinal Cord Exits the Skull.
