Tissue engineering applications Flashcards
Why is tissue engineering important?
to grow human tissue/organs outside the body from patients own cells or existing and new cell lines. lab based screening for drug testin and to improve stem cell therapy effectiveness.
What are 6 difficulties with mechanical conditioning in bioreactors?
1) interruption of nutrient flow to apply force 2) invasive processes can compromise sterility 3) application of 3D spatially varying stresses is difficult 4) scaffolds must be rigid 5) forces myst be transmitted to the cells rather than direct application 6) limitations on size of constructs
What is the MICA system?
The magnetic ion channel activation system
What are advantages to the MICA system?
removes requirement for fixed dimensions which fit into a conventional bioreactor, allows the use of mechanically weak scaffold materials, reduced infection potential and unprecedented control of physical stress parameters
What is the FeRx system of delivering anti-cancer drugs?
FeRx use 1um iron-activated carbon particles with therapeutic drugs attaches. The magnet pulls the particles into the tissue where the drug is released.
