Thrombus/Embolus Flashcards
1
Q
Definition
A
- embolus: a moving blood clot
- thrombus: a stationary blood clot
2
Q
assessment (thrombi)
A
- compare measurements bilaterally for symmetry
- compare heat bilaterally
- assess for edema: pitting or non-pitting
- Homan’s sign: you can see a positive Homan’s sign where the pain is felt when the feet are dorsiflexed
3
Q
risk factors (thrombus)
A
- venous stasis: increased risk of clot formation due to immobility from surgery (Sx), injury, or bed rest
- injury to the venous wall
4
Q
prevention (thrombi)
A
- passive ROM
- sequential compression device (SCD)
-TEDS or compression bandages
decreasing coagulation:
- heparin (IV)
- low dose heparin (subcutaneous): within our scope
- Coumadin: oral (monitor international normalized ratio/INR)
5
Q
Tx (Thrombi)
A
- activity may or may not be encouraged
- warm packs
- elevation
- anti-inflammatory meds
- low molecular weight heparin (LMWH)
- monitor for emboli
