Thrombocyte Annormalities Flashcards
Define thrombocythemia
Hemorrhagic syndrome associated with marked increase of circulating platelets
What is an increase of thrombocytes called?
Thrombocythemia
What are two causes of polycythemia?
Myeloproliferative disorders-proliferation of megakaryocytes and megakaryocitic leukemia in cats and dogs
What are three symptoms of polycythemia?
Spontaneous hemorrhage a, GI bleeding, splenomegaly
Since platelts are larger what happens in thrombocythemia?
Loose functioning ability, bleeding will cease if counts return to normal
What is the treatment for thrombocythemia? 2
Irradiation and chemotherapy
What is a decrease in thrombocytes called?
Thrombocytopenia
Describe thrombocytopenia 4
Decreased production, increased destruction or utilization, abnormal distribution, excessive loss
What will a bone marrow aspirate indicate?
Hypoproliferative vs hyperdestruction
What is Hypoproliferative?
Not producing enough
What is hyper destructive?
Producing but getting destroyed
what drug can cause thrombocytopenia?
Chloramphenicol
What are five ways thrombocytopenia can be acquired?
Drug toxicity, radiation, viral, rickettsial, protozoal
What are 3 things that can cause Hypoproliferative thrombocytopenia?
Hereditary, acquired, abnormal production
What can cause hyperdestruction thrombocytopenia? 10
Immune mediated, bacterial, viral, rickettsial, drug induced (aspirin), anaphylaxis, DIC, microangiopathies, acute infections, hereditary
