Throat Flashcards
Function of thyroid gland
Regulates matabolic rate
Thyroid produces
Thyroxine hormone (iodine rich)
Thyroid gland is regulated by
Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
THS is secreted by
Pituitary gland anterior
Deficiency of thyroid secretion
Hypothyroidism
Excess thyroid secretion
Hyperthyroidism
What’s the impact on metabolic rate of thyroid secretion deficiency (hypothyroidism)
Metabolic rate drops
Thyroid gland sometimes increases in size but not always
Name throat structures
Hyoid bone
Thyroid cartilage
Cricoid cartilage
Name and describe structures that make up hyoid bone
A horseshoe shaped bone
2 large horns (cornua) from body posteriorly
2 lesser cornua superiorly from junction between body and greater horns
What’s unique about hyoid bone?
No articulations with any other bones
Extrinsic muscles of throat divide into
Supra hyoid
Infrahyoid
What are the distinctions of the thyroid gland?
Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism
Which is the other term for any enlargement of the thyroid gland?
Goitre
Which are the main functions of the throat?
Breathing, swallowing,blood
Supply to the brain, supply vagus nerve
What you may treat the throat for?
Specific local condition, emotional tensions, systematic condition as disorder, trauma, it is a significant factor, you are drawn there
Do we suppress/ hold something in our throat?
Yes expression and emotions
The wrapping of the umbelical cord arround the neck at the birth, can have a potential repercussion on the whole personality?
Yes
Which trauma can affect the throat?
Wrapping the umbilical cord arround the neck, wounds, injuries, strangulation
Which is the bone of the throat?
Hyoid bone
Is the hyoid bone directly articulated with other bone?
No
Which is the most prominent solid structure within the throat?
Thyroid cartilage
Which is the second name of the thyroid cartilage?
Adam’s apple
Which cartilage is situated below the thyroid cartilage?
Cricoid cartilage
Is the cricoid cartilage palpable?
Yes
In how many groups are divided the extrinsic muscles?
Tell me their name.
2 groups,
Supra-hyoid muscles and Infra-hyoid muscles
Which are other 2 prominent muscles in the throat?
Sterno-cleido-mastoid and scalene muscles
Which are the nerves, who supply the Supra-hyoid muscles?
Cranial nerves V, VII and XII
Which are the nerves, who supply the Infra-hyoid muscles
Cervical plexus (C1-C4) and cranial nerve XII
Which are the nerves, who supply the muscles of larynx and pharynx?(swallowing)
Cranial nerves IX and X
Which are the nerves, who supply the sterno-cleido-mastoid?
Cranial nerve XI and C2
Which are the nerves, who supply the scalene muscles?
Cervical nerves C3-6
Which are the nerves, who supply the Thyroid gland?
Sympathetic supply from T1-3,
Parasympathetic supply from laryngeal branches of vagus.
Which are the nerves, who supply the parotid glands?
Cranial nerve IX- parasympathetic branch
Which are the nerves, who supply the submandibular glands?
Parasympathetic branch of cranial nerve VII
Are generally parotid glands glands and submandibular glands palpable?
No
In how many lobes is the thyroid gland divided? Are they palpable?
There is any exeption?
The thyroid gland consist
in 2 lobes.
They are not palpable, except in thyroid disease.
Which may be some possibile cuses of lumps in the throat?
Hyoid unbalanced, allergic reactions, bee sting, goitre, tumours, obstructions
Is it good idea take a direct contact on the throat, if the person had a trauma?
No, it may bring up vivid and traumatic memories of being attacked
When do we have a retraumatisation?
When the therapist is overly concerned and excessively anxious and puts too much emphasis on the risk of retraumatisation, thereby creating anxiety and fear in the patient
Which are the main points in order to address throat trauma specifically?
Talking about the throat;
Talking about taking up contact on the throat;
Taking up the contact somewhere near the throat;
Taking up actual contact on the throat
