ONLY - Pathway of the nerves Flashcards
nerve pathways
Describe the olfactory pathway
receptors in olfactory mucosa>cribiform plate>olfactory bulb (synapse) > olfactory tract> forebrain.
Describe the optic nerve pathway
retina> optic canal>passes medial to clinoid process > optic chiasma (decussate) > optic tract> thalamus> optic radiation> visual cortec in occipital lobe
Describe the vestibular-cochlear pathway
external acoustic canal>cochlear > internal acoustic meatus > anterolateral pons
Describe the Hypoglossal nerve pathway
anterolateral lower medulla > hypoglossal canal > inferior side of cranium base, occiput condyles anterior > muscles of the tongue
Describe the accessory (spinal) nerve pathway
spinal division = C1-4 > vertebal canal within dural > foramen magnum > merges briefly with cranial division > jugular foramen > sternoid-cleido-mastoid and trapezium muslce
Describe the accessory (cranial) nerve pathway
medulla > merges briefly with spinal division> jugular foramen> merges with vagus > pharynx, larynx and palate
Describe the trochlear nerve pathway
posterior midbrain> middle cranium fossa> cavernous sinus> superior orbital fissure> superior oblique muscle
Describe the abducent nerve pathway
anterior pons> middle cranium fossa> cavernous sinus> superior orbital fissure> lateral rectus muscle
Describe the vagus nerve pathway
anterolateral medulla> jugular foramen>supplies throat structures >cartoid sheath > viscera
Describe the glossopharyngeal nerve pathway
anterolateral medulla > jugular foramen> parotid gland, stylopharyngeal muscle, posterior 1/3 tongue, middle ear, (parasympathetic), pharynx.
Describe the trigeminal nerve pathway opthalmic division
pons>trigeminal ganglion> floor of middle cranial fossa > cavernous sinus > superior orbital fissure > supra-orbial foramen (notch)
Describe the trigeminal nerve pathway
maxillary division
pons>trigeminal ganglion> anterior floor of middle cranial fossa > foramen rotundum > inferior orbital fissure > infra-orbial foramen
Describe the trigeminal nerve pathway
mandibular division
pons>trigeminal ganglion>foramen ovale> mandibular foramen > mental foramen
motor division passes under the trigeminal ganglion then to foramen ovale.
Describe the Facial nerve pathway
Pons > internal auditory meatus > facial canal > stylomastoid foramen (motor branch) muscles of face.
Parasympathetic - submandibular and sublingual glands of face, anterior 2/3 of the tongue, ear (tympanic membrane, stapedius muscle), mastoid and temporal areas
Describe the pathway of the Spinal accessory nerve
Arises from C1-4 >passes up inside the vertebral canal > foramen magnum> breifly joins the cranial division passing back out to jugular foramen > down to sternoid cleiod mastoid and trapezium
