Q

Describe the threats by the spartacists.

A

The Spartacist League believed in a new political idea, communism, and wanted Germany to be run by small councils of soldiers and workers, not by a large government.

6th January 1919: The Spartacists took over Berlin, thousands trying to take over important buildings.

Eberts response: Sent 2,000 Friekorps to attack the Spartacists.
After 3 days, the Friekorps recaptured the buildings and arrested the leaders of the Spartacists, later killing them and ending the revolt.

Q

Describe the threats by the events of Kapp Putsch.

A

March 1920: Wolfgang Kapp gathered around 5,000 Friekorps and took over the capital.
He arrived to eventually take over the whole country, make the country and its army strong again and recover the land lost in the Treaty of Versailles.

President Ebert and the rest of the government fled Berlin.
Kapp didn’t have the support of the workers, and they all went on strike resulting in:
no electricity
no gas
no water
no trains

After 100 hours, Kapp gave in and fled abroad.
Ebert and his government then returned to Berlin.
